Flowing Hair Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 410
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded AU-50. Possibly the finest known for this variety and die state. Fresh and original with considerable mint luster still visible. Well struck with nearly full hair detail. Friction is noted only on the highest points as well as some minor scattered marks in the obverse field. The diagnostic die cracks for this variety are quite prominent and should not be confused as scratches. Certain to bring a strong price as such quality is seldom offered for the flowing hair type (PCGS # 6052) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded VF-35. Completely choice and original -- never cleaned, or dipped, or "conserved" (today's euphemism "for professional cleaning"). Lovely, silver lilac toning, with hints of steel in some of the protected areas. Struck from dies that were slightly out-of-parallel, such that the bottom left obverse and upper right reverse show some weakness. Overall, a very pleasing example (PCGS # 6052) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,700.

1897 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 68 Deep Cameo. Show-stopping, blast white surfaces with heavy cameo devices. In an old, green-label holder, meaning that the grading is strict and that no credit was given (as it would be, if graded today) for the strong cameos. We suspect (but do not guarantee, of course) that this coin will come back as a PR-68 DCAM if resubmitted. PCGS has graded only 7 examples at this level, with none higher. A remarkable coin that should see fierce bidding (PCGS # 6544) .

1907-D Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-68. Rings of bright blue iridescence surround champagne toned centers. Extremely well struck and almost perfectly preserved. A remarkable coin for the collector who wants only the finest quality. Pedigreed to the John Jay Pittman collection, one of the most celebrated and valuable collections of coins ever assembled. This is the finest example graded by NGC (interestingly enough, the NGC Census reports two coins at this level, both from the Eliasberg collection)! Accompanied by a PCGS tag indicating the Pittman provenance and a grade of MS-68 (it seems that at least one owner of this coin was seeking an MS-69 grade).
Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.

1918-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A brilliant example with strong luster and virtually pure white color. The real attraction of this piece is its strike, which is decidedly above-average for the issue. The detail on Liberty's cap is excellent, her blouse is fully defined, and one can even see the clear separation of the hand and thumb. We can't recall ever seeing a finer strike on a 1918-D half dollar! (PCGS # 6575) .
